formi[...]to GCC this week, many will find that navigating the North
parking lot is more aggravating than ever.[...]up and replaced by a fenced-in construction site. The entire grassy area west of the
science building will also be inaccessible due to construction. However, the inconveniences
experienced by students on the north part of campus in the next year will not be in vain. In May,
the construction will give way to a brand new, state-of-the-art science building :

When the old science building was constructed in 1966, it was one of the one of the grandest
buildings on campus. As time passed, the building has become increasingly out-of-date. “Science
has changed a lot in the past 30 years,” said Robert Thompson, the Department of Applied Sci
ences chairman, “the problem is, our building has not.” In the planning stages for nearly two
years, the project finally broke ground earlier this summer
will be operational by May 15, 2000

The building will consist of two wings, joined together by a 2,000 square foot student com
mons area. The east wing will house physics, astronomy, and geology labs and classes. The west
wing will be for chemistry labs and classes.[...]nd
retired teachers, will be directly adjacent to the student commons. This feature will! allow more
in[...]e doors, with a large teacher preparation room in the middle of each wing. This setup will
eliminate the “logjam” currently experienced when teachers[...]to
work their way through a hallway of students.

The color scheme for the building will be Southwest earthtone. The carpet will be a mixture of
black and tan, and un[...]be done in beautiful ground concrete floors. All the
chairs in the building, both lab and classroom chairs, will be[...]features will include a geological map built into the
Northwest part of the site, and a drainage area on the southwest portion of the site that will
convert to an amphitheater when dry.

The building was designed with its impact on the environment in mind. Working closely with
archite[...]n added many environmentally friendly features to the building. The most
noticeable of these features is the number of windows. Every room in the building, including
faculty offices, will be lit[...]ing to Thompson, this feature alone will
decrease the electric bill from approximately $25,000 per year[...]ofthe stadium

In addition, an entrance to Sahuaro Ranch Park will! be built
from the new parking lot, allowing the lot to be used for both
students and park patrons. Eventually, the east parking lot will
give way to more buildings as need warrants.

Although the science department is leaving its old building
for new surroundings, the space will not stand vacant. The old
building will be remodeled to accommodate the math depart-
ment.

An additional section for faculty offices and tutoring is being
built on the westside of the building. The total cost of both the
new building an d the refurbishing of the old building are $6.6
million. When construction is finally finished, the new science
building will be the most modern structure on campus

It appears that our campus has paid a
little visit to the neighborhood plastic
surgeon. Judging by the grossly unat-
tractive chain-link fences and dirt piles,
we must still be under the knife. Since
classes ended last semester, Glendal[...]construc-
tion on a new science building beganin
the north parking lot, leaving many
students with no place to park their cars
on the first day of classes. In an effort to
alleviate the parking dilemma, GCC
extended the North parking lot, adding
more spaces than the science building
stole. That's right. We now have nearly
the same amount of parking spaces on
campus as we did several years ago,
before the English offices and Humanities
buildings were erected.

Unfortunately, however, the
fences and dirt piles will not
cease to exist until the

When I first enrolled in high school one of the faculty counselors

The low hum of the Macintosh computer soothes my nerves as my
fingers race across the keyboard, tapping in a quick beated rhythm. The
telephone rings and my mind jolts away from the land of page layouts and
copyediting. It’s afte[...]uple.

audible grunt before I retum to the computer,

Late nights in the newsroom are common for me and the section
editors; we have little time to piece the articles and pictures together before
sending the completed project—the newest issue of The Voice—to press.

At first glance, my position as editor in chief may seem like a boring,
mundane task, but the deadlines, the interviews, the adrenaline and the

Once in a great while, an entry into the cihematic arts redefines a particular genre and the way
we look at movie-making. In the horror genag dew films have nveted audiences as emotionally and

Massachusetts, blamed the unexplainable problems they faced on demonic forces and witchcraft

A recent release from Onyx Books titled The Blair Witch Project - A Dossier, outlines the events
that began the legends surrounding Burkitgville, In 1785, severa[...]found guilty of witcheralt
and banished deep into the Black Hills durin extremely harsh winter. It is assumed she perished
in the woods until a year later when all of i accuser’s and many of the children in town
vanish. The townspeople pack up and abandon. Bigir, blaming the disappearance’s on Elly Kedward,
or what would soon come to be known as’ i Witch

In 1824, the town of Burkittsville is fe ‘on What was originally the Blair site. For nearly the

By the end of the film, the audience can’t help but feel as emotionally and physically exhausted
as the students in the film, compounded only by what might be considered the most nerve-jangling.

Now comes the real shock... none of this is eal! You heard right. Every bit of The Blair Witch
Project is completely fictitious, despite what m@Vie-goers may have heard elsewhere. The makers of
the film, Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick, Went to great lengths to make this film as realistic as
possible. Entertainement news shows have’ “ited that residents of the real town of
Burkittsville, Marylind havé.become enragt amount of tourist activity the film has produced

Here are just a few examples of why one might think the film is a real documentary: The entire
movie is recorded on both color film and black,and white 16mm tape. The stars of the film, Heather
Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michae[...](which also happen to be their real names), shoot
the movie themselves which gives it an unstable,shaky[...]to what one might find on their
own home movies. The view may suddenly drop to the ground for no apparent reason, sweeping
across the feet of the camera operator and go ouf of focus for a moment or two. Also, the lack of
traditional film lighting and any background scote gives an ominous look and feel to the film... if
they can’t see what's out in the darkness, the audience. In fact, while filming out in the
woods, the three stars had no seripts whatsoe filmmakers would leave baskets at the base of
trees and rocks with simple directing mes[...]Heather
about not knowing her way back e car.” The rest of the dialogue is complete improvisation on
the part of the actors. All ofthes@@fements compile a truly terfffying-tale. A tale so impressive that
the makers of the film cages huge recognition and praise at The"Sufidance Film Festival. But they
didn’t stop there.

Akind of * ‘mockufhient: ary” called The Curse of the Blair Witch aired on The Sci-Fi Channel
recently. Addimjeo the realistic factor of the story is stnkingly believable interviews with
Burkittsville Tesidents, including the town’s shenff, the local histonan, and even the families of the
“vicums.”

The makers of the film even went so far as to produce fictional news broadcasts about the
disappearance’s, fictional missing person affid[...]orms, ficuonal forensic and police
photography of the discovered film fox and even fictional private investigative agency interview
reports.

Even the most talented of Hollywood director's and screenplay wniters should take
to the unbelievable amount of work that went into this student film. The cre ity of
Mynck and Sanchez, along with the three actors, prove that it does not take big nam[...]special effects to create a wuly terrifying film

The Blair Witch Project, fictitious or not, is undoubtedly the scanest film of the last twenty years
and a worthy addition to the horror genre.

If you have been a student or
teacher on the Glendale Community
College campus for any length of
time, you are no doubt aware of the
many purveyors that make use of
the college campus to market their
products. GCC opens its campus
regularly to the business commu-
nity in an effort to benefit students
while at the same time strengthen-
ing the local economy. We Journal-
ists at The Voice appreciate the
efforts of the campus administration
to return its waters to the well from
which it came. Many of the students
who attend GCC are drawn from
the local community and will return
to jobs in this community. The
diplomas they cam are a direct
result of their hard work and local
taxes. Having the campus open to
businesses makes for good neigh-
bors and demonstrates the adminis-
trations business savvy

The greater portion of entrepre-
neurs that use the campus provide a
genuine service to students or a[...]students have completed their
education here with the help of
those employers providing incomes

to the[...]need to be wary of. Credit
card companies are at the top of the
list. It is the opinion of this newspa-
per that credit card comp[...]ttle to assist students, and in fact
are harmful. The financial standing
of most college students, let alone
those at GCC is dubious at best. For
the greater part young college
students are dependant on their
parents, many of them still living at
home. The rigors of college study
demands full time attenti[...]ds their education. This goal is
jeopardized when the student is
distracted by working extra hours to
pay credit card debt. The practice of
issuing credit cards on the basis of
parental income is deplorable.
Parental income does not reflect the
student's ability to pay a debt; it
does, however, unfairly obligate the
parent to pay the debt if the student
can’t. This is a formula for disaster

marketer interprets as the incentive
needed to get the customer to sign
on the dotted line. In exchange for a

them to pay $120 back for every
$100 spent.

The practice of signing young
students up for credit[...]one’s
benefit. Banks that issue credit
cards to the young are finding that
many students go bankrupt early in
life. The result is that for a number
of years these students must sit on
the financial sidelines while waiting
until they can pay their debt, or the
credit review companies drop the
bankruptcy rating. Generally, this
takes anywhere[...]nt, and it’s hard to feel
sorry for them

Recently while studying in the math solution I made an egregious error: I

left my cell phone on.

Wouldn't you know it rang, and in a moment of weakness I answered it.
Recognizing my sin I quickly took the call outside hoping to avoid attention.
Thinking I had done what | could to reduce the disturbance of the call, I
sneaked back to the math solution hoping no one noticed.

It didn’t work.

I was accosted by Pat Brazie and a[...]at there were penalties for taking calls while in the math solution. | was
read the “Riot Act” by Pat's assistant and then removed from thethe test cubical and forced to listen to three straig[...]ed lectures by Doug Dawson on math application in the real world.
Afterwards I was dragged to the nearest restroom and chained to the wall. I
watched helplessly as Pat held my TI-86 calculator over the toilet, resting her

foot on the flush lever.

It was more than I could take, I fell apart , a broken shell of aman!

Any thing but the TI-86 I cried!

T promised I'd never do it again and offered up my Nokia as a sacrifice
to the gods of numerology. I was thereupon released on m[...]-
zance and admonished never to bring my phone to the math solution again. I
left, blubbering apologies[...]Having that possibility
taken away, she turned to the
only cure left—hell was about to
get cheated

the seven Arizona cities visited
on tour by the Lula Washing
ton Dance Theatre

The Los Angeles based
troupe, which currently has

praised Lula Washington,
artistic director and lead
choreographer for the troupe,
as “a gifted original.” Wash-

ties worldwide. Some of her
many honors include the
California Dance Educators
Award, the 1996 Woman of the
Year Award from the Califor-
nia State Legislature, and the
1997 Dance Woman/Living
Legends Award.

representative for the City of
Phoenix Theater Division,

troupe are AIDS, homelessness,

Why do they have this sign up? Wha[...]s
how will it affect your personal ability to use the computers here at
Glendale Community College. Wit[...]ow takes them longer to do their work and most of the
time it takes about half an hour to find a computer to use. The lack of
computers seems to only be a problem from about 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
when the greatest concentration of students are on campus.[...]or of Instructional
Computing, Suzanne Murry. For the rest of the year HT2 will be
missing one computer pod and as of right now, the alternative plan is
to find substitute tables to make more computers available. The first
option that comes to mind is to change the only quiet study area on

| campus. This being in the HT2 building where the “math solutions”

| Stations are. But have no fear all you studying students although
these tables look the same they don’t have any computer ports or
power boxes so there not going anywhere.

The next question that comes to mind is why one pod is going to
be missing anyway? It’s because of the condition of the tables. GCC

| feels that it is about time to repair the tables before they fall on
someone. It seems the last time the tables were re-finished neither
the glue or the lamination held very well.

You may ask, so why didn’t they repair the tables over the
summer? Well they tried to, but the carpenter was too busy and the
only way to fix the tables was to take them one at a time during the
fall semester. If everything goes as planned they won't be missing

Valley Art Museum, said the first week
of the exhibit has been a complete

According to Gray, Hillis’ art is not
like the tourist art some have come to

artist. Gray also stated that one can see
the emotion in all the paintings and
there are no bland expressions. Gray

we really knew what was
happening here. Let’s make
sure this gets fixed and that it
.doesn’t happen again. The F-
16 is a 20 million-dollar asset
that you can’t afford to go out
and lose every day.

Voice: How do you feel
the people of Arizona viewed
these mishaps?

The course catalogue describes the class as “a study of automotive
systems operation and maintenance for the consumer.” It is recom

The class focuses on systems in the car and also how to purchase
service, Green said.[...]feeling that they are being taken advantage of
at the mechanics, and that is largely due to a lack of comprehension of
the basic terminology and basic systems of the car, Green said

customer service representative said, “The teacher tries to familiarize
the class with the basic system of cars to give us a better handle on
what the mechanic will tell us about. The class is to help the con-
sumer.”

How much of the television report is devoted to typical police-

much of the report actually explains complicated civic issues, such as
urban sprawl, the competency of public schools or the influence of big
money on politics?

these days it is a must to look at some of the things that
are important to students. One of the biggest things that
students have to deal with is[...]nd can take a long time.

Students spend hours in the bookstore looking for the
books they need and most of the time the bookstore is
out of the book that the student is looking for. With this
in mind bookstores are now looking into the Internet to
broaden their availability of books.

The on-line bookstores are also showing in their
campaign to gain interest that the students now don’t
even have to leave their homes and stand in line[...]now takes

about an hour and a half and you don’t have to stand.
This for some students is reason enough to go and check

out the on-line bookstores.
